Uses for TriCoder
– Entering numerical data (such as shelf measurements) to be entered into Excel later
– Scanning book barcodes to be entered as batch uploads into Millennium for Count Use purposes (DO NOT USE FOR CHECK-IN)
– Scanning book barcodes to check accuracy of student employee work
- Scan a percentage of books on a truck to be shelved. After student has shelved truck, check scanned books for shelving accuracy
- Before student shelf reads, scan a number of books and misshelve them. Also, scan books before and after book in its misshelved location in case student doesn’t find mistake.
Scanning barcodes
- Push green button to turn scanner on
- Press <1> for data collection
- Choose default program <0>
- When prompted to “enter data”, scan a book barcode
- When finished scanning barcodes, press <F1> on scanner to return to the menu screen
- Can turn off TriCoder after scanning (data is automatically saved)
Uploading scanned barcodes to Count Use (Do not use for checking in/out material)
- Enter Count Use mode in Millennium
- Connect scanner to PC using the included USB cord and wait for your PC to detect the TriCoder before proceeding
- Press <2> DATA UPLOAD on the TriCoder
- Press <F2> on the triCoder and wait for information to transfer into Millennium
- Item information and item status will appear for each item
- If the items uploaded correctly, follow the prompt to delete the file by pressing <enter> twice
- If barcode did not upload properly, press <0>
- Repeat steps 3-5
Barcodes not in Millennium
Pop-ups such as item messages or holds will not appear in Count Use mode. Barcodes not in Millennium will appear as pop-ups and will interrupt the upload.
If this happens, you can re-upload the file to a Word document and copy and paste each item, or edit the review file.
Clearing the “bad” barcode by editing the review file
- Press <1> for data collection
- The scanner will display a “DATA FILE EXISTS” message
- Press any key to exit and return to ENTER DATA prompt
- Press the up arrow <c>
- At the data review prompt, press <begin>
- Press <begin> followed by any key to start at beginning of review file
- Press <clear> then <enter> to remove the first barcode from the list
- Repeat until you have cleared everything up until the “bad” barcode
- Press <F1> on the scanner twice to return to the main menu
- Check that there are no extra characters in the Count Use field in Millennium
- Upload the remaining barcodes
- If the items uploaded correctly, follow the prompt to delete the file by pressing <enter> twice
To Collect Numerical or Alphabetical Data
- Push green button to turn scanner on
- Press <1> for data collection
- Choose default program <0>
- When prompted to “enter data”, use keypad to type numbers or press blue <up arrow> before typing to enter letters
- When finished entering data, press <F1> on scanner to return to the menu screen
To Delete Existing Data File
- The TriCoder will say “DATA FILE EXISTS” when you try to collect data
- Turn off the TriCoder and then turn it back on
- Press <2> DATA UPLOAD
- Press <F2> (this will prompt you to delete information)
- Press <ENTER> also labeled <YES> twice (data is deleted)
To Upload Data into Excel
- Turn off the device after scanning (data is automatically saved)
- Turn the Device on again
- Connect scanner to PC using the included USB cord before proceeding
- Open Excel and highlight cell where you would like data to be uploaded
- Press <2> DATA UPLOAD on the TriCoder
- Press <F2> and wait for the information to transfer into Excel
Adjust volume level of scanner
- From the home screen, select <5> (setup)
- Press <4> (speaker settings)
- Press <1> repeatedly to find preferred beep volume
- Press <2> repeatedly to find preferred beep tone
- Press <0> twice to return to main menu
Installation of TriCoder firmware
- Install firmware from enclosed mini CD
- Most tray loading CD bays have 2 ‘wells’. Place the mini CD in the inside ‘well’.
- From the installation menu, choose Utility Programs
- Most student PCs are not authorized to install programs. If the installation is blocked, you must logout of windows (CTRL+ALT+DEL), and login using your staff account.
- If you are unable to install the firmware from the mini CD, you may download the drivers from the TriCoder website
- Go to http://www.barcodehq.com/downloads.html
- Download “5000 TriCoder Firmware”
- Unzip and install on your PC
Check battery level of TriCoder by pressing <status>
